Abstract:

This article evaluates the current structure of State regulation and supervision of the Colombian banking, financial and insurance markets. The local safety net is compared to the international standards of regulation and supervision as well as to the most representative literature available on the subject. The author concludes that it is convenient for the Colombian banking, financial and insurance sector to have a single regulator and supervisor – not necessarily the Colombian Central Bank-. Such Institution must be autonomous and independent from the government. Otherwise, the single authority will not be able to fully comply with the objectives of the State intervention in the sector as it will be wrongly influenced by the short sighted interests of politicians.
